I like the picture, Cheryl. It added a sense of gritty realism to your text, and kept me reading the whole chapter. But then the real world called, and all my online activities froze.

Add more, but pick them carefully?

I've just begun posting the second novel in my senior center murder series, Gold Medal Murder. I have no idea how Geezer Lit will fare on the web. The blog host (PrintPusher) suggested that I add photographs to break up the text. I realize that reading on the web is different than holding a book in your hands, but what do you think? I added one in the first chapter but I'm ambivalent. Should I add more? Take out the one that's there?

Welcome, L.M. Noonan. Your novel looks very interesting, and I'll look it over in the next few days. I've posted a link to it on the sidebar, and one on The Germaine Truth's fiction blog list.

There are a number of YA writers out there, including myself, who should be able to give you some constructive feedback. Our group here has been pretty inactive for the last month or so, but we are a fairly friendly and helpful bunch. I believe that the time is good for a fiction blogging community to come together, but we haven't come close to the critical mass we need to keep the discussion rolling on this forum.

Anyway, good luck in your efforts.

hello everyone, my name is L.M.Noonan and recently I began posting online my speculative novel for young adults , although in many ways it's a more a sort of childrens' book for adults. "Extreme Holiday" at http://extremeholiday.blogspot.com is posted at the rate of one chapter per day until complete. I'll then make it available as a free PDF download after any tweaking deemed and or advised necessary.

I'm really hoping for some constructive criticism as I am very new to writing, and learning as I go. I've spent the past three decades making and exhibiting visual art and this is very strange territory I find myself in.

I live well away from the urban sprawl, on top of a mountain in Queensland, Australia.

Most definitely. I tried out a couple, including writingforums.com, but the concentration there seems to be more about style improvement, getting published, etc. Lots of "Here's my latest story!" stuff, but nothing that really relates to online publication. We could probably convince them, or a similar group to start such a category, though.

I recently had an email exchange with Eli James about Digg, and it occured to me that Digg has no topics at all for creative writing, and a number of other categories of creative arts, such as photography, art, etc. Digg is an important tool for websites to be seen, and without a topic category, people interested in Literary Arts can't flag their interest.

I think it would be worthwhile for us creative writing types to insist on Digg adding our category. Here is a letter I sent to feedback@digg.com:

To: feedback@digg.com
From: duane poncy <tsalagi@elohigadugi.org>
Subject: Missing topic categories - literature, creative writing online, photography
Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2007 07:48:53 -0700

As an author and online fiction writer, it is disappointing to me
that there are absolutely no literary categories on Digg. In fact,
you have no topic categories at all for creative professionals with
websites. Frankly, I don't dig it!

In a recent interview with David Wellington he mentioned that he and his friend had posted to a number of forums, etc. about his site. Would it be helpful to create a list of those for folks who are just beginning to post their fiction online? It would eliminate the need for everybody to do the same research and might provide a checklist for those who have been up-and-running for a while.

I was also thinking that maybe even a sample "plug" could be helpful. Several of the groups that I belong to have pretty strict guidelines on what's allowed. Just a thought.

Howdy folks, I'm Shaun. Bones, they'll call me if given the chance. I've been experimenting with serial fiction (blooks to you, I suppose) for a few months now over at my site, and it's a lot of fun.

My current book is Rabbit Rue, which is probably 2/3rds done so far, at something like 240 pages if you use the 2k/page rule.

I've been having a hard time finding a community for people trickling a novel into production, so it's good I'm not the only one!

I'm currently writing the sequel and plan to publish it in the same way.

I've done a guest post for Eli at novelr.com and I'm particularly interested in promoting the idea of reading fiction online and how we can expand the current niche we're all working in.

PS: Scott, point 4 is definately true. For me, if someone's going to rip off my stuff it's either the biggest compliment or a cheap shot that won't get to far anyway.

Maybe teaming up with other creative sites such as DeviantARt and Red Bubble. I post episodes of my story The Callings on Red Bubble and have received some responses so far.

Here's a couple of thoughts.

One thing that might be useful would be to have a forum for constructive criticism--a place where we can share ideas or thoughts on writing and how to present our fiction to the online world.

Another might be to have a section where we can have 'listings' for each blog, maybe with reviews... a bit like an Amazon.com product page or something. We'd have to be careful to make sure that it's used constructively: I'd hate to see someone laying into someone else's blog and just being negative, for instance.

I like the idea of an aggregator too.

Not sure I can come up with helpful suggestions on how to actually implement any of this, though: I know squiddly pip about php and that sort of thing!

Hi! I'm Richard, I write Undead Flowers (http://undeadflowers.com) which I've been writing for about 18 months now. One thing I'm particularly interested in is how to entice people who read mainstream blogs (e.g. entertainment, technology or political blogs) to read fiction blogs. I want to write entertaining stories with integrity... I'm still learning how to do that! :)

I'm also very keen on having a space where we can constructively criticise each other: it is through criticism that I grow and that my writing improves.

I have been browsing the 9Rules website, and I think there are some tools there worth emulating. The feed aggregator idea I like, in particular.

Each writer participating in our community would have her/his site feed aggregated, so that a summary and link to each new post would show up on our community site. There would be a comment link to each of these posts, so we could begin discussion on the piece. We would have to find a way to encourage active participation, though, to make it work.

This would have to be done through a WordPress site, or some other content management system, as I don't think bbpress could be easily modified to do that.
